Let My People Go

listen...

In February this year, Collegium Musicum of London marked the 200th anniversary of the passing of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act with a double concert featuring music about slavery. Pieces included settings of Psalm 137 (‘By the Waters of Babylon’ – the song of the Hebrew slaves in captivity in Babylon) by Giovanni da Palestrina.

Tallis’s poignant setting of Part II of ‘Lamentations of Jeremiah’ continued the theme of biblical slavery, but reflections on African slaves in America/the Caribbean were provided by ‘Free at Last’, a Spiritual arranged by Paul von Hippel, and Michael Tippett’s arrangements of five Spirituals from ‘A Child of Our Time’.

CML performed in London to a large audience on 10 February, a concert that also featured The City University Music Society String Ensemble. The second performance, on 24 February, was at the picturesque village of Coldharbour in Surrey, where a choir-only programme was given to great acclaim.
