All-American programme for CML's next concert
In the Summer of 1964, after a visit to Chichester by Bernstein – undertaken while the composer was on sabbatical in the UK – the cathedral’s Dean, Walter Hussey, wrote to the composer requesting a choral work for the cathedral. He added, “I think many of us would be delighted if there was a hint of ‘West Side Story’ about the music.” What Bernstein produced was ultra-exuberant. Hebrew psalms, exhilarating instrumentation and a beautiful solo for treble voice combine in a work of great optimism which has become a choral classic.
In a programme which also includes works by Eric Whitacre, Philip Glass and Stephen Sondheim, Collegium Musicum of London - together with an illustrious ensemble of instrumentalists and soloists - will also present Tippett’s five sublime arrangements of spirituals from his oratorio A Child of Our Time.
And there’ll be more than just a hint of ‘West Side Story’ in an exciting programme inspired by music-makers from across the pond.
